The new Secure Redact editor (beta)

The new Secure Redact Editor provides a range of enhanced redaction capabilities to make it faster and easier to:

  • Review automated detections for redaction in a longer or more complicated video,

  • Track additional objects in complex scenes with lots of movement,

  • Group together tracks for specific individuals to unredact them,

  • Review and edit full resolution video, whilst staying zoomed in.

Updates include the Timeline View, Editing Toolbar, Advanced Tracking and Enhanced Zoom - all aimed to streamline the workflow for more advanced redaction tasks, and to speed up dealing with more difficult video footage (such as body-worn camera footage with lots of camera and scene movement).

The new editor has been released in beta so users can get the benefits from it right away. It can be accessed by clicking on 'Editor (beta)' in the main video view within the app. You can easily switch between the original editor (V1) and the new editor (beta) by clicking the button at the top right of the screen.  All changes made in the beta editor will appear in V1. To redact and download your video after using the beta editor, go back to V1 and click Redact as normal.

Getting started

Once you have uploaded your video to Secure Redact it will be automatically processed to detect all faces and number plates that appear in the footage. These detections will be displayed as orange boxes overlaid on the video player, and signify the faces and number plates that will be blurred in your final, redacted and downloaded video.

Each redaction box belongs to a track, and each track belongs to an entity.

Redaction box

The area of a face, number plate or object that will be redacted, on a single video frame.

Track

A consecutive set of redaction boxes following the same face, number plate or object through the video, ready for redaction.

Entity

A set of tracks grouped together, corresponding to the same face, number plate or object. Tracks can be grouped automatically and manually.

Upload and review your video

Upload and review your video to make sure that all the faces/number plates that you need to redact have been detected with an orange redaction box over them.

Navigate through the video using the video controls: for a Complete Overview of all the Secure Redact buttons, including keyboard shortcuts, visit here.

The simple workflow to use Secure Redact

  1. Review your video and make sure that all the faces/number plates that you need to redact have been detected with an orange redaction box over them.

  2. If you need to keep an individual (or subject) visible in the video, you can follow these simple steps:

    1. Add an alias to the entity associated with that individual.

    2. Add all of the tracks associated with that individual to that entity.

    3. Take tracks out of the entity that may not be associated with that individual.

    4. If needed, unredact the entity to make that individual visible whilst everyone else is blurred.

    5. Repeat this process for other individuals/number plates/objects if needed.

  3. Add tracks to any faces/objects that have not been automatically tracked for redaction.

  4. Clean up any false positives from the video (if needed).

  5. Preview the blurred video in the video player to check you have anonymised all the data you need.

  6. Redact and download your final video.

Getting started

Make an individual(s) visible whilst everyone is redacted

  • There are four simple steps to follow:

    1. Assign an alias to the entity associated with your individual, X (e.g. “Black shirt”).

    2. Add all of X’s associated tracks (orange redaction boxes) to the “Black shirt entity”.

    3. Take out any tracks that are not associated with X from the “Black shirt” entity.

    4. Unredact the “Black shirt” entity.

For the full How-to guide to unredact an individual, visit here.

  • All the thumbnails in the Entities Panel represent entities. These are grouped tracks that correspond to the same face, number plate or object. Tracks can be added to entities automatically and manually.

To make the most out of your Entities Panel, and to easily manage the tracks corresponding to one individual, follow these simple steps:

  • To add any tracks associated with your individual to their entity, visit here.

  • To take tracks out of an entity that are not associated with that individual, visit here.

  • To unredact or delete an entity, visit here.

  • Unredact entity = This means that the orange redaction boxes (tracks) will disappear from the video player, and in your final video, and the individual will be visible. This step can be reversed to re-redact the video - just click “redact entity”.

Delete entity = This will delete the entity and all the associated tracks. Visually, the individual will be visible in the video player and the final video. But this step cannot be undone: if you wanted to go back and re-redact the individual, you’d have to add all the tracks again manually.

Edit existing orange tracking boxes

  • Deleting a redaction box = If you delete a redaction box, the track will still be part of its associated entity, the only difference is that the individual will not be redacted in that particular frame.

Deleting a track = Once you “delete a track” you cannot go back, and the track disappears from the video player and its associated entity. If you wish to recover the track, you can only do so by clicking UNDO if that was the last action you performed. If this is not the case, you must manually add a new track.
