WhatsApp will leave the UK if required to remove E2E encryption 

WhatsApp has announced that the company will leave the UK if they are made to weaken its encryption standards under the proposed Online Safety Bill. Under the bill, Ofcom or the government could mean the company has to apply content moderation policies that would be impossible to comply with without removing end-to-end encryption.

ICO takes action on London Borough after failure to respond to multiple FOI requests

The ICO has taken enforcement action against Lewisham Council after the authority failed to respond to over 300 Freedom of Information requests within the 20-day limit. The council has been accused of keeping “hundreds of people in the dark” and has been called on to rectify the situation immediately.

The FTC gives warning about generative AI systems

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has recently discussed the "deeper, emerging threat" of deceiving consumers through generative artificial intelligence, serving as a warning to consumers. The blog post cites chatbots, voice clones and deepfakes as potentially putting consumers at risks.

London ULEZ cameras may be accessed by the Met Police for law enforcement purposes

Privacy campaigners have raised concerns over the London mayor’s plans to give the Metropolitan Police access to cameras set to be installed as part of the ULEZ zone expansion. So far, more than 300 of the 2,750 cameras have been installed across London and these new permissions will allow police to use them for “preventing and detecting” crime.

Iowa passes a new data protection law

The US state of Iowa has recently passed a unanimous vote approving a new comprehensive privacy act for businesses operating in Iowa or targeting Iowa residents. This will make Iowa the sixth state to pass privacy legislation, following California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and Utah.
