Is privacy missing its mark on emerging tech?

No. 63: Bringing you the news that matters in video privacy and security

There's no doubt that emerging tech holds immense promise and potential for driving innovation and transforming various aspects of our lives. In balance, many countries, companies and states are trying to enforce privacy regulations, frameworks and practices to ensure the rights and security of individuals and data are protected.

The ICO's generative AI warning serves as a reminder that rushing the launch of AI applications without proper privacy safeguards can have serious consequences. Privacy-by-design principles, thorough privacy impact assessments, and rigorous testing are essential to identify and mitigate potential privacy vulnerabilities.

But are these frameworks hitting the mark? How can legislation do more to equalise the balance between innovation and privacy?

The FCC is trying its hand at maintaining this balance by creating a data protection and privacy task force which looks to coordinate rulemaking, enforcement, and public awareness needs across sectors.

Responsible development of emerging tech requires specific privacy practices tailored to the technology, data used, and potential risks. Minimising risk is a common approach, but additional measures such as integrating privacy into development, promoting transparency, and fostering collaboration can better protect personal data and uphold privacy rights. Working together and engaging in open dialogues and consultations with regulators can help shape privacy frameworks that address emerging challenges while encouraging technological advancement.
